The gay rights movement is a civil rights movement that works for the rights of the LGBTQ community. The Gay Rights movement works against laws stopping people in the LGBTAQ community from enjoying the same rights as straight people. This movement also works against discrimination aimed at the community. During the late 1960s, the gay rights movement really pushed for social reform, and one of the most famous events that began the push for change happened in June 1969. A gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, was harassed by officers for no reason. Also, Toronto police officers raided four bathhouses causing a large amount of property damage as well. As a result of this, hundreds of people went to the streets to riot against what happened and the injustices the LGBTQ community faced. After Stonewall and the Toronto raids, the LGBTQ community began to have a say in government, with an example being that of Harvey Milk. Groups began to form such as ACT UP which focused on fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic and calling for funding for research to stop the virus. It was harder to get funding or even an article on the epidemic at first because they thought it only affected the LGBTQ community. It took a long time for the president during that period to even say the word, “Aids.” Today, the LGBTQ community has made great strides throughout time when it comes to having their rights, however the Trump administration threatens to push push back the hands of time with barriers in the military and followers who disagree with the movement.
